Effect of time intervals of selenium administration after injection of mercuric chloride on toxicity and renal concentration of mercury in mice.

چکیده
The effect of selenite administered at various time intervals after mercury treatment on the toxicity and renal content of mercuric mercury in mice was studied. A marked protective effect of selenite on growth depression and renal lesions caused by mercuric chloride was observed in mice receiving mercury and selenite simultaneously. However, growth depression was not protected by post administration of selenite at more than 20 min after mercury administration, and the renal lesions of mice receiving selenite at 1 hr after mercury administration were indistinguishable from those of mice receiving mercury alone. Selenite markedly depressed the renal accumulation of mercury administered simultaneously but seemed to be incapable of eliminating mercury which had already been deposited there before selenite administration. These observations suggest that the protective effect of selenite on the acute renal toxicity of mercuric mercury was mainly due to reduction of renal mercury accumulation, rather than the elimination of mercury from the kidney.

Effect of Sodium Selenide on Renal Toxicity Induced By Mercuric Chloride in Rat
Background and Aims: Mercury, with its oxidative activity, causes damage to the antioxidant enzymes thus resulting in physiological disorders. Sodium selenide is an antioxidant that protects antioxidant enzymes. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effect of sodium selenide on renal toxicity induced by mercuric chloride in rats. Materials and Methods: Animals were divided in...
متن کاملRole of selenium in mercury intoxication in mice.
Studies were conducted to examine the effect of pre and post-treatment of selenium in mercury intoxication (20 micromole/ kg b.w. each given intraperitoneally) in mice in terms of lipid peroxidation (LPO), glutathione (GSH) content, activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT) and mercury concentration in liver, kidney and brain. No significant alterati...
متن کاملThe Effect of Rebadioside A on Attenuation of Oxidative Stress in Kidney of Mice under Acetaminophen Toxicity
Background: Acetaminophen (APAP) overdose causes renal and hepatic injury. It is also believed that oxidative stress has a pivotal role in APAP-induced renal injury. Therefore, protective effects of different antioxidants have been examined in APAP-induced renal and hepatic toxicity models. Stevia rebadiana is a plant with a high degree of natural antioxidant activity in its leaf extract. T...
متن کاملDose and time relations in Hg(++)-induced tubular necrosis and regeneration.
Mercuric chloride is a well-known human and animal nephrotoxicant. Previous studies have demonstrated an inverse relationship between dose size and relative whole-body retention of mercury after oral administration of mercuric chloride to mice. The present study indicates that this inverse relationship is caused by a dose-related induction of kidney damage leading to increasing leakage of mercu...
متن کاملRepeated Administration of Mercury Accelerates Progression of Multiple Sclerosis through Mitochondrial Dysfunction
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative and autoimmune disease that it’s molecular etiology and factors involving in its progression remains unknown. In this study for evaluation effect of mercuric on progression of MS we investigated the additive effect of mercuric sulfide on the brain mitochondrial dysfunction in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) model of MS in C57BL/6 mi...
